DON’T SAY EVERYTHING YOU THINK!
By Doug Fields

My son borrowed this from his Aunt Gerri Rominger which is my sister-in-law and I thought sharing it would be a blessing to you today. My son says

“This is good. I share his quick wit and propensity for sarcasm and struggle to rein it in at times. Maybe someone else can relate to this so I'm sharing.” Gene Dasher Jr.

The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. Proverbs 12:18 KJV
There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health. NIV
Some people make cutting remarks, but the words of the wise bring healing. NLT

Don't Say Everything You Think!
By Doug Fields

Not long ago, I was around thousands of people in different environments, watching a multi-day volleyball tournament and visiting attractions and theme parks. I’m a people-watcher by nature, and having the opportunity to sit closely with people, wait in lines, and gather in crowds, I had lots of time to observe others.

Boiling down my observations into two categories, here’s what I most noticed:

1) Spouses saying unkind things to one another, and
2) Parents verbally belittling their children.

I’m sure these observations don’t reveal anything new or surprising, but they occurred so frequently that I couldn’t escape noticing. People can be quite nasty to one another.

Since it doesn’t take intelligence to be critical, let me suggest one relational principle that has helped me. I realize that this is easier said than done, but it is as simple as this: Don’t say everything you think!

I realize that holding your tongue takes self-control and a degree of humility, but the results are amazing! When someone triggers an emotion in you and you want to react with a verbal dagger…don’t. When someone injures your pride and you want to say something that will be a zinger comeback and put the other person in his or her place…don’t. When someone exhausts your patience and a strong reaction will make you feel better…don’t.

I have a quick wit and a propensity for sarcasm, and with this amazing combination of skills, I create some really strong statements…that no one hears but me. Why? Because as a spouse and parent, I’ve learned that I don’t need to say everything that I think. When I slip up and allow the statements to escape my mouth, I end up wounding others, triggering more reactions, demeaning those I love, heightening tension levels, and create negative memories.

Words are always powerful. But misguided words hurt, and they hurt deeply. As today’s Scripture points out, using reckless words is like stabbing another with a sword. In almost every instance, it’s best to keep the sword in its scabbard.

Try this today: Don’t say everything you think! Just because you think it, doesn’t mean you have to say it. Not all words must be spoken

HE IS A GREAT GOD #720072012

HE IS A GREAT GOD

As I search the thoughts of my heart today I keep clinging to the song “How Great Thou Art.” What a thrill it is to raise my voice and proclaim the greatness of God. I look and behold all the wonders around me and it is easy to proclaim “How Great Thou Art.”

This week my precious church received a need that God worked out. We have been in need of a new roof and really knew no way to come up with the necessary funds. What does God do? He provides.

First someone said maybe we had hail damage from the tornados the last two years. We had our insurance people check it and they agreed but our roof was so old they depreciated it over 30%.

After Christmas I felt impressed to start working on a fund and BAM God blessed it and touched hearts of two families that use to attend here to start sending help and the congregation went an extra mile with their giving. Just like my God isn’t it. This week we had enough funds to cover the total cost with the help of the contractor giving us a big hand in his price.

Not much to anyone else but we are happy and elated what God just did and now we are working on additional funds for other repairs we feel is needed.

Thank you Lord, what a burden you relieved off of us. I wonder as I close do you need him right now. Jesus stands with his hands outstretched awaiting your call. Receive of him and be blessed today.

Join me in singing “How Great Thou Art.”

O Lord my God,
When I in awesome wonder
Consider all
The works Thy Hand hath made,
I see the stars,
I hear the mighty thunder,
Thy pow'r throughout
The universe displayed;

When through the woods
And forest glades I wander
I hear the birds
Sing sweetly in the trees;
When I look down
From lofty mountain grandeur
And hear the brook
And feel the gentle breeze;

(Chorus)
Then sings my soul,
My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art!
How great Thou art!
Then sings my soul,
My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art!
How great Thou art!

When Christ shall come,
With shouts of acclamation,
And take me home,
What joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow
In humble adoration
And there proclaim,
"My God, how great Thou art!"

ARE YOU AT GOD'S BECKON CALL #76107122012

ARE YOU AT GOD’S BECKON CALL

It has been an interesting week for my wife and me to say the least. Last Sunday we told the congregation we were running up to Pigeon Forge for a couple of days. Well, we didn’t make it. We got up late Monday and decided we would just wait until Tuesday and get an early start.

I got up early alright with a bug that would not turn me loose. I was so sick and took three days to start feeling better. Yep, you guessed it; my wife got it the next three days. So my wife was at my beckon call bless her heart for three days and I was at her beckon all for three. Our poor dogs didn’t know what to do but  just lie at our side and watch us. Even one of them got sick.

During this time if I needed an ice pack or a wet cloth or if my wife needed one we jumped up and took care of the need. While walking the dogs yesterday my inspiration was are we at God’s beckon call?

The song says “When He calls I will answer here am I.” Can we say we are committed enough to God to drop whatever we are doing and heed his beckon call. You may say I use to be that way. Are you sitting on a pew somewhere today and unwilling to respond when he calls?

It has bothered me seeing so many Christians sitting on the side line when they are needed by God. I cry out Lord, help us be at your beckon call. I know you have fought a good fight, I know you have done good works but don’t you know God is not finished with you yet. I used some words one time with some senior ministers and it said, “We’re not dead yet, we’re not dead yet, glory hallelujah, we’re not dead yet.”

We must not just talk about when we heeded his beckon call; we must be an example in showing this generation how to do it. We may be limited by health and other ways but we can do what he places before us.

Some of my greatest inspirations are the seniors around me that get up and heed God’s call. I think of my mom at 80 asking her pastor if she could have prayer with the little children while the others did their devotion before going to class. I think of every time I see Sis Elva Howard as she pushes herself to visit someone, I think of her sister Sis Bessie Hardin who had poor health but would get up and go visit my mother-in-law. I think of Sister Ina Tomlinson who would go take care of people and do their laundry  and pick them up for church. I think of Bro. Ray Wynn who struggles to move but blesses people with his visits and prayers. I think of Bro. Henry Biggers even after 90 gets up and goes to visit folks. I think of W.A. Howard and his continual ministry of love. I Think of Wayne Chelette  a great teacher and even when his wife was having surgery took time to visit and have prayer with others.

Time and space stop me be but these folks brave the trail and some of them are still with us heeding God’s beckon call. Will you do the same today? Souls are crying for someone to show them the way.  Another song says “Give up and let Jesus take over…” Lord let me heed your beckon call I pray.
